On 7 July 1879 the customs houses and the customs points of the Principality of Bulgaria were established with Decree No.2 of Prince Alexander I of Battenberg. On this day the creation of the Bulgarian Customs is celebrated as well as the professional holiday of the Bulgarian customs officials. The decree reads that the main task of the newly-created institution is ‘to protect the interests of the Principality’. This managerial act happens immediately after the appointment of the first post-liberation government with Decree No.1 of 5 July.
