Customs officers at Kapitan Andreevo BCP found undeclared currency with a BGN equivalent of over BGN 840,000

Customs officials found undeclared currency with the equivalent of BGN 842,485 during three inspections of two trucks and a bus leaving the country.

On 12.09.2022, at Kapitan Andreevo BCP, around 02.00, arrived a truck with Turkish registration, traveling from Germany through Bulgaria to Turkey. The truck were selected for customs inspection. During the inspection customs officers found hidden in the instrument panel in the driver's cabin which 27 bundles of euro banknotes of different denominations. The total amount of discovered currency is 139,930 euros with the BGN equivalent of 273,679 BGN.

A few hours later, around 07:30, another truck with Turkish registration arrives at the checkpoint on its way from Germany to Turkey. During the customs check, 189,075 euros with the BGN equivalent of 369,798 BGN were found under the driver's seat in a bag with documents.

The third case of discovered undeclared currency was on 09/09/2022 during an inspection of a bus traveling from Romania through Bulgaria to Turkey. During the inspection the customs officials found two polyethylene bags hidden in a factory cavity above the driver's seat. In each of the bags, one package was found, wrapped in a black polyethylene bag, containing euro and dollar bills. The total amount of undeclared money is 91,800 euros and 10,000 dollars for a total leva equivalent of 199,008 leva.

In the cases, rapid proceedings were initiated by investigative customs inspectors under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office, Haskovo-Territorial Department - Svilengrad. The drivers of the three vehicles, two Turkish and one Romanian citizen, have been brought in as defendants and detained for a period of up to 72 hours by prosecutor's decree.
