Customs officers from Ruse Customs Directorate seized 125,000 euros hidden in a passenger's jacket and shoes

Vidin District Prosecutor’s Office charged a driver with concealing EUR 125 000 when crossing the country’s border. The amount was discovered by customs officers from the Ruse Customs Territorial Directorate during an inspection in the area of the New Europe Bridge - Vidin.
At around 09:30 on 13.05.2026, the customs inspectors stopped a passenger car moving from Romania to Bulgaria for inspection, driven by the German citizen M.C.
When asked by a customs official, the driver of the car said he was carrying €10,000 in currency and presented an envelope with money.
In the course of an ongoing inspection, the car was diverted to the Vidin Customs Office. In a subsequent personal examination of the driver, customs officers found several envelopes and stacks of euro banknotes - 75,000 euros were found in pockets and under the jacket lining, and another 50,000 euros under the insoles in the shoes he was wearing during the inspection.
The total amount of money retained is EUR 125 000.
Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated under Article 251(1) of the Criminal Code.
By order of a prosecutor at the Rayonna prokuratura – Vidin (District Prosecutor’s Office, Vidin), M.C. was charged in a case concerning an unfulfilled obligation to declare particularly large amounts of cash carried across the country’s border.
