Undeclared currency for nearly BGN 1.5 million was found by customs officers at Lesovo BCP
A record amount of undeclared currency with a BGN equivalent of BGN 1 458 904 was found by the customs officers at the Lesovo border checkpoint in a truck driven by a Bulgarian citizen. This is the largest seizure of undeclared funds at the Lesovo BCP for a period of more than 10 years.
On November 2, 2021, at around 00.10, a truck with Polish registration arrived at the Lesovo border checkpoint on the "Outgoing trucks" route to Turkey. The vehicle was traveling without load on a route from Poland to Turkey. In the customs control zone, the driver, a Bulgarian citizen, stated that there was nothing to declare. Under the 'risk analysis' method, the truck is selected for a thorough customs inspection. During the inspection customs officers found undeclared 530,000 euros and 250,000 dollars in a backpack placed between the driver's personal luggage on the upper bed in the cab. The currency has a total lev equivalent of BGN 1 458 904.
Pre-trial proceedings have been instituted in the case by an investigating customs inspector, which is being conducted under the supervision of the Yambol District Prosecutor's Office. The driver - a Bulgarian citizen with initials MI, was detained. He was brought to criminal responsibility under Art. 251, para. 1 of the Penal Code.
